Waiting In Line- Elementary School

Getting a green card or visa can take a very long time. These are terms for when someone is waiting to get one.


  • Priority date: Your "place in line." When you turn in your immigration paperwork, the government stamps it with a date. You have to wait until that date is called before you can get your visa.


  • Visa bulletin categories: A monthly calendar or chart published by the government that updates everyone on whose turn it is to get their visa based on their priority date.


  • Current / Not Current: If your place in line is "Current," it means it is finally your turn to get your visa! If it is "Not Current," it means you still have to wait in line.


  • Aging out:A sad thing that happens when a child turns 21 while waiting in a really long immigration line. Turning 21 can sometimes cause them to lose their spot in line because they aren't considered a "child" by the rules anymore.


  • Child Status Protection Act (CSPA): A helpful law that "freezes" a kid's age on their paperwork so they don't lose their spot in line if the government takes years to look at their application.
