Types of Identification- High School

These are the regulatory documents, official identification systems, and tax tracking numbers used by federal agencies to monitor non-citizens.

• A-number (alien registration number): A unique, permanent seven-, eight-, or nine-digit identification number assigned by the federal government to non-citizens upon the creation of their primary immigration file. It tracks the individual across all stages throughout their life.

• Employment Authorization Document (EAD): A physical photo identification card (informally called a work permit) issued by the government. It provides definitive proof that a non-citizen has been granted temporary, legal authorization to seek employment and earn income in the United States.

• Social security card: A federal identity card with a unique nine-digit number issued to citizens and authorized non-citizens. It is primary for tracking individual earnings, calculating tax contributions, and verifying employment eligibility during hiring processes.

• Driver’s license without a social security number: A policy implemented by various state governments that separates the issuance of a state driver's license from the requirement of a Social Security Number. This allows undocumented residents to pass driving exams, obtain vehicle insurance, and drive legally.

• Individual Taxpayer Identification (ITIN): A nine-digit tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). It is designed for foreign nationals who are required to file U.S. taxes but are legally ineligible to receive a standard Social Security Number.

• I-94: The official Arrival/Departure Record issued to international travelers. It documents the precise date of entry, the specific port of entry, the visa status under which the traveler was admitted, and the specific date by which they must depart the country.

• Form Codes (I-765, I-821D, etc.): The codes assigned by USCIS to standardize applications.

  • I-765 & I-765W: The primary applications filed to request an Employment Authorization Document (work permit).

  • I-821D: The application used to request consideration for the DACA program.

  • I-291: A formal notice issued by an immigration officer indicating that an application or petition has been officially denied or closed.

  • I-601 & I-601A: Applications filed to request a waiver of specific grounds of inadmissibility, such as an unlawful presence violation.
