Houston Teens Gather After Local Man Dies During ICE Traffic Stop- High School

A group of Mexican American teenagers in Houston has been meeting each weekend to support one another after the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old construction worker who was shot and killed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during a traffic stop on July 7 in the Magnolia Park neighborhood.
Many of the teens say Salgado Araujo reminded them of their own fathers, uncles, and other family members. Because the incident happened in their own community, they say it has left them feeling scared, confused, and worried about their families' safety.
Community members say the tragedy has affected more than just one family. They believe it has had a lasting emotional impact on the neighborhood, especially for young people who are trying to understand what happened.
The shooting has also renewed discussions about immigration enforcement and the effects it can have on families and local communities. Supporters of stronger enforcement argue that immigration laws should be enforced consistently, while others believe changes are needed to reduce harm to families and build trust between communities and law enforcement.
As investigations and public discussions continue, many residents say they are focused on supporting one another and honoring the life of a longtime community member.
