Terms for People- Elementary School

These words describe the different titles or labels given to people based on their connection to the U.S.

• US Citizen: Someone who was either born here or went through a special process to become a citizen. They have all the rights and protections the country offers.

• Alien: "Alien" is a word for anyone who is not a U.S. citizen yet.

• Nonimmigrant:  A "Nonimmigrant" is someone who is just visiting for a short time (like for a vacation or school) and plans to go back to their home country.

• Undocumented: Someone who is living in the U.S. but does not currently have official, updated permission papers from the government.

• Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR): A person from another country who has been given official permission to live and work in the U.S. forever.

• Beneficiaries: The lucky people who are chosen to receive a benefit, like getting a visa or a green card because a family member or boss asked the government for them.

• Child: In immigration rules, a child is usually an unmarried person who is under 21 years old.

• Dual nationality: Having citizenship in two different countries at the exact same time.
