When we talk about public health, we are talking about how we keep our neighborhoods, schools, and cities healthy and safe! Immigrants play a very special role in keeping everyone in our country healthy.

Have you ever visited a doctor or a clinic when you were sick? There is a big chance that the person helping you was an immigrant!

  • In the United States, about 1 out of every 4 doctors came from another country to work here.

  • Many immigrant doctors move to quiet farm towns or big city neighborhoods where there are not enough doctors.

  • Immigrants also work as helpers in nursing homes and hospitals, making sure older grandfathers and grandmothers get their medicine, meals, and care every single day.

Without immigrant healthcare workers, hospitals would be super crowded, and people would have to wait a very long time to see a doctor!

Scientists who study health noticed something really cool: when people first move to the United States from other countries, they are often very healthy! Scientists call this a special health pattern.

Why are new immigrants so healthy?

  • Many people moving from other countries bring healthy eating habits with them, like cooking meals with fresh vegetables, beans, and whole grains.

  • They often walk or use buses and trains to get around, which keeps their bodies strong.

  • Many immigrant families live close together and help each other out, which helps everyone feel happy and supported.

Living in a new country can be tricky! Over time, as immigrants live in the U.S. for many years, their health can start to change.

Sometimes, busy schedules mean eating fast food instead of home-cooked meals. Also, moving to a new place and learning a new language can be stressful! That is why it is so important for everyone—no matter where they were born—to have time to rest, play, and eat good food.

Public health works like a giant shield that protects a whole neighborhood.

  • If one person gets a cold, it can spread to others. But if everyone can see a doctor, get their shots, and get medicine when they feel sick, the whole school and community stays safe!

  • When everyone has access to a doctor, fewer people end up needing to go to the emergency room.

Immigrants help keep America healthy by working as doctors and nurses, sharing healthy habits, and caring for people who need extra help. When we make sure everyone in our neighborhood can stay healthy, our whole community grows stronger!
