Mexico Responds After Houston Man Dies During ICE Operation- Middle School

On July 7, officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted a traffic stop in Houston, Texas, involving Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. Mr. Salgado Araujo was a 52-year-old Mexican citizen and local construction business owner who had lived in Houston for approximately 35 years. During the incident, an agent shot Mr. Salgado Araujo, who was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
Details surrounding what happened during the traffic stop are currently disputed:
The ICE Account: Federal officials state that Mr. Salgado Araujo attempted to drive away from the scene and struck an officer with his vehicle, leading an agent to open fire.
The Family's Account: His family strongly disagrees with the agency's version of events. They shared that he had no criminal record and was simply driving co-workers to a job site that morning.
At this time, no public video footage of the stop has been released.
The tragedy has drawn international attention, including from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Mexican officials noted that Mr. Salgado Araujo's only immigration violation was living in the United States without legal authorization.
In response, the Mexican government announced plans to file criminal complaints in U.S. courts regarding Mexican citizens who have died during immigration enforcement operations or while in ICE custody. According to officials, these filings involve 14 individuals who died in custody and 3 who died during enforcement actions, including Mr. Salgado Araujo.
